Iceland | A Fusion of "Must See" Attractions

The whole of Iceland is a fusion of “must-see” attractions, however the Southern Region boasts some of the most beautiful on the island. Besides historic sites, the area possesses glaciers, volcanoes, hot springs, waterfalls and more.

I wanted to drive through the interior of the island so I opted to travel during the month of June. Even though there's little snow and ice remaining at this time it's imperative that you still opt for a large 4x4, and even then things can still get tricky on the trails if you're not paying attention.

That said, if you're anything like me, you'll be stopping every five minutes to set your camera up, so very little chance of breaking any land speed records!

Please note that no car hire company (and I mean no) in Iceland will ensure you against river crossings, so unless you're wealthy, or in you're own vehicle, you have to ask yourself "is it worth it"? Did I attempt a river crossing? Hell yeah! But my heart was in my mouth. To get to Fagrifoss Waterfall (above), you have to cross a river. See river crossing in-car video below.

You used to be able to drive right up to the plane wreck of the old DC-3 on the black sand beach at Solheimasandur, but those days are over. It's now a 4-5km walk there and back, so allow yourself 1 hour 30 mins.

This trip was a recce for future trips and now that I have a real feel for the lay of the land, travel distances and timings etc, I plan to visit in the winter months, not only for the Northern Lights but because I really want to see this place in the snow.
